Because if Dean being human means that he’ll be able to pass through the purgatory gate… And Benny ‘once’ being human means that he can hitch a ride through the purgatory gate..
If Jimmy Novaks still exists, then Cas is inhabiting a fully human being, and according the ‘rules’ Purgatory should be completely willing to ‘spit’ him out because he’s sticking in its craw. Because being possessed by an angel does not take away Jimmy’s humanity, he is still a HUMAN possessed by an angel.
But no one seems to think that this is the case. Instead, they are treating Cas-not as if he is an angel possessing a human…but a completely Supernatural creature with NO humanity AT ALL. If this is correct, then Jimmy Novaks’ soul is GONE, gone to Heaven on one of Cas’s deaths and resurrections.
That means Cas is alone in that meat-suit. And when was the last time the writers bothered to establish that a Supernatural creature was alone in its human meat-suit?

Because Sam pointed out that he could not have a relationship with Ruby while she was ‘wearing some secretary’. With that in the show history, Dean could not very well have a relationship with Cas if he was ‘wearing some ad salesman.’ Because it raises issues of consent and dubious consent and a big can of worms. Jimmy was portrayed as a happily married heterosexual father.
Consent issues come into play if this is an overt romantic relationship with sexual contact (like kissing) or actual sex. Because Jimmy was there for plenty of longing stares and that was no problem. Jimmy could be there for any number of hugs without a problem. But if the Show is going to write Dean and Cas as romantic… If they are going to follow through on the trend that they have ALREADY ESTABLISHED that Dean and Cas are a romantic couple, then it means that they are set up to kiss and have sex. Because that’s what romantic couples do.
There’s no need to worry about consent issues if Cas is alone in his meat-suit. Ben Edlund has pretty cleverly removed that as a possible obstacle to Dean and Cas’s romance. Jimmy isn’t there any more. Does this mean that Dean and Cas will kiss…or even….have sex? I don’t know, but it’s awfully darn suggestive, don’t you think? Taken with everything else going on this season, I have to say, it sure looks like the Show is going there.
Excuse me while I flail.
Good eye, lurea, and I think you make very good points about the necessity of total consent in any potential sexual relationshp that develops between Cas and Dean, and yes, if Cas can’t get out of Purgatory because he doesn’t have any human in him, then we know for sure what happened to good ol’ Jimmy Novak.
But just because Team Purgatory implicitly assumes that Jimmy is gone doesn’t mean he is. How would Dean and Benny even be able to tell, for starters?
Even Cas assumes Jimmy’s not in there any longer— but is that fair? After all, angelic possession is much more intense than demon possession, like being “chained to a comet” in Jimmy’s words. Would a comet be able to tell if an ant were chained to it? Cas might just be assuming a best-case scenario here, that after all the death and resurrections, God took pity on Jimmy and took him home.
In fact, I wonder if this might actually be the secret to Cas getting out of Purgatory, in that hedoesstill have Jimmy in there somewhere, and so he can take the “human portal” out. We’ll have to see.
(BTW, this is neither here nor there, but between the empty vessel/consent issue you’ve noticed and the physical return of the (genuinely horrifying) Leviathan, Ben Edlund made quite a few nods to Sera Gamble’s influence on Supernatural in this episode. And listening to the S7 commentaries, you get the sense that Sera and Ben just had the utmost respect for each other as writers, that they loved to just sit around the writer’s pit and kick ideas and Dick jokes at each other, and basically what I’m saying is that everyone loves Ben & Jerry but Gamble & Edlund are my writer brotp.)
bandwagon of people who presume...hospital in season 5 since
