I touched on Cas’s feelings about Meg briefly in the latest installment of The Great Season 7 Rewatch, but basically, I think he gravitates toward her as a caretaker, whereas Meg is initially attracted to him because he’s a fallen angel, just like her Daddy.
Yet in the stretch between “TBAI” and “Reading is Fundamental”, clearly there’s a genuine fondness that grows between the two of them; it’s not the same kind of love-hate relationship we saw in Seasons 5 and 6. Meg stays with Cas when nobody else does; and Cas is nice to Meg when nobody else is; and frankly, I think that’s kind of cool, maybe even a little sweet. I mean, here are two individuals on opposite sides of the eternal heaven-hell war; who by their very natures should hate each other without qualm or hesitation; and yet still they manage to show basic human kindnesses toward one another; still they forge a genuine friendship that nobody else seems to understand. That’s really positive, I think, all things considered, and certainly end-game Season 7 needs all the positiveness it can get. :)
Let me be clear: Meg isn’t Cas’s soulmate — and nor is Cas Meg’s — and while I do think both of them harbor a bit of a fleeting crush on each other in “Reading is Fundamental”, I don’t think their relationship offers any real lasting romantic potential.
Still I do think they genuinely like each other — not because they have to, or because one needs the other in some way (although obviously that is true too), but because they just do. Honestly, I think Meg might be Cas’s first friend since, well, ever. Not a human charge, not a family member, not a fellow soldier-in-arms. Just a buddy with whom he can kick back and let down his guard. Even Dean is more than just a bud, you know?
Same goes for Meg — I think Cas might be the first friend she’s had since she went demon; after all, demons don’t really have a lot of friends, it’s not really part of the job description.
And we can all use a few more friends in our lives, no?
